Phil Scott appointed Group Publishing Director

March 12

Proven magazine executive Phil Scott has been appointed Group Publishing Director of ACP Magazines Pty Ltd, responsible for the Australian consumer and custom titles.
ACP is Australia’s leading magazine group and sells approximately 52% of the total stand alone magazines published in the Australian market.

Announcing the appointment, Ian Law, CEO of PBL Media, which owns ACP Magazines, said the promotion of Phil Scott was a very positive step for the magazine group.

“Phil is hugely experienced as a publisher and editor with a great track record of growing the business in the Men’s Interest, Specialist & Custom Publishing divisions at ACP in recent years.

His work on the acquisition of the former EMAP Australia, the formation of our joint venture with BBC Magazines with successful launches of Good Food and Top Gear have been outstanding, in a difficult market. This year he has successfully brought recipes+ into the ACP portfolio.*”

His new role will mean that in addition to his existing titles he will take on management responsibility for the balance of the ACP’s Australian consumer portfolio, including magazines such as Australian Women’s Weekly, Woman’s Day, NW, Grazia, Madison, TV Week, Take 5, Harpers Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Cleo, and Good Health.

Scott will report direct to Ian Law and will have responsibility for the bottom line of the Australian consumer and custom titles.

Mr Law said in addition to making broader use of Phil Scott’s experience another key factor behind the decision was the desire to consolidate the management of  magazines in Australia in to one operating division.

“The change in Phil’s role has meant we can restructure the Sales Operations of ACP in to one group which will headed up by Lynette Phillips, who was previously Group Publisher and Sales Director for the Women’s Lifestyle titles.

“Lynette has done a great job on reinvigorating many of the magazines in the women’s group and has been instrumental in bringing new talent to ACP following the retirement of Pat Ingram. I would like to publicly acknowledge her input in the past 12 months.

“But we have missed her considerable talent and energy in sales management and she now has the massive job of driving the combined sales force within the Australian business.

“In her new role as Director of Sales for ACP Magazines’ consumer and custom titles Lynette will report to Phil Scott and they will work closely to ensure ACP magazines is operating in a cohesive and driven manner.

“Lynette will also continue to hold publishing responsibility for the ACP Book publishing operations which are also an important part of our business."

Mr Law said the overall benefit of the changes was that it will enable ACP to operate more effectively as one integrated company, which will be of benefit to advertisers and readers.

The other major change as part of the management changes within PBL Media was the promotion Louise Barrett as Director of Integrated Sales and Group Trading for PBL Media.

"Lou Barrett has done a wonderful job as Director of Sales for ACP’s Men’s Interest, Specialist and Custom group and in more recent months, as head of Integrated Sales across the PBL Media group, working with the Sales Directors of NINE, ACP and ninemsn.

“We have made the decision to promote Lou to the full time role of Director of Integrated Sales and Group Trading for PBL Media. This major step up in responsibility and signals a major up-scaling of our sales management at a group level.

“Lou will report directly to me in her new senior role and she has the mandate to work directly with the sales directors of each of our key business units including NINE, ACP Magazines, ninemsn and Ticketek.

“Lou has already made several key appointments to her group trading team. The bottom line is we are devoting significantly more resources to the concept of group trading solutions for advertisers who are using all our media properties including television, magazines and online. Our whole focus is to deliver innovative marketing solutions to our advertisers.”
